Academy Award-winning actor and El Paso native F. Murray Abraham will appear at this year’s 15th annual El Paso Community Foundation Plaza Classic Festival. Abraham is a 1958 graduate of El Paso High School who won the Oscar for Best Actor for his performance as the envious composer Antonio Salieri in director Milos Forman’s Amadeus.

The Bill Mattingly Scholarship Fund in the El Paso Community Foundation recently awarded $7,000 in scholarships to two physicians and three optometry students specializing in low vision at universities across the country.

Yesterday we participated in Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar’s Texas Broadband Listening Tour on the UTEP campus. This tour will help guide the strategic vision of Texas’ new Broadband Development Office (BDO) by listening to Texans’ insights about internet access and collecting input to develop the state’s first broadband plan.

Nearly half of El Paso County residents and one quarter of El Paso County businesses do not have broadband access, according to a new study commissioned by the El Paso Community Foundation and the County of El Paso.

The El Paso County Broadband Feasibility Study and Market Analysis found that just 56.7% of residents and 72.7% of businesses have broadband internet connections. This is lower than the Federal Communications Commission figure of 96.8%. The eastern portions of the county, particularly the Lower Valley, have the greatest broadband access needs. This lack of access hinders the county’s economic growth.

The Border Art Residency offers a selected artist a period of retreat for creative work in a living/studio space in the heart of El Paso, Texas. Resident artists are provided with a fully furnished living/working space, a monthly stipend, and utilities paid.

Artstream, one of our supporting organizations, hosted Expressive Journeys earlier this month. Artstream collaborated with Pots N Prints, Frontera Land Alliance and El Paso Museum of Archaeology, local artists and others to create a cultural and educational outdoor experience outside the classroom.

Free public tours of the historic Plaza Theatre Performing Arts Centre return at 12 noon, Tuesday, March 8. The tours, which are sponsored by El Paso Live and the El Paso Community Foundation, resume after being on hiatus since March 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
